How To Heal Your Chronic Illness

Whether you’re newly diagnosed or a seasoned veteran, you’re not alone in this fight. Nearly 133 million people have at lease one chronic illness. And that number is expected to keep rising.
I’m assuming you are trying to find relief from your symptoms of the chronic illness you’re fighting. Let’s explore eight ways you can get on the path to healing your illness.

I used six of those listed to heal from fibromyalgia. Today I live a basically symptom-free life. I rarely have a flare-up.
But this wasn’t always how my life was. A little over fifteen years ago, I was in extreme pain and so fatigued I could hardly get out of bed.
After months of doctor visits, blood tests, X-rays, and neurology appointments, I was told nothing was wrong with me (one doctor even went as far as to tell me to find a psychiatrist because this was obviously all in my head).
But I knew there was. You don’t just suddenly have your limbs and extremities tingle and go to sleep, have pain so deep all over your body that you feel like you’ve been run over by a truck, be so dizzy you actually fall down, begin having migraines and extreme chest pain, get so nauseas you can’t eat, and are so fatigued you can’t make it across a small room without having to lie down and be completely healthy.
God knew exactly what I needed (not really a surprise there!) and used my sister to find a holistic chiropractor that helped with chronic illnesses. After my first visit, he diagnosed me with fibromyalgia and started me on a path to healing. Within twelve weeks I was symptom-free and back to living my life.
So let’s get started so you can learn how you can heal your chronic illness.

2. Diet
Nutrition plays a vital role in healing your chronic illness. A poor diet full of sugar and processed food is like poison in your body contributing to the development and progression of chronic illnesses. While a diet full of fruits, veggies, and whole grains reduces inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation contributes to the development of all sorts of illnesses and ailments.
Water is also extremely important in healing from your chronic illness. It helps flush out toxins and keeps your body working in tip-top shape.
3. Exercise
Exercise helps with the pain associated with chronic illnesses. Typically pain is associated with illnesses like arthritis, fibromyalgia, and trigeminal neuralgia.
Often those fighting chronic illnesses also deal with depression and/or anxiety. Exercise improves moods and reduces those unwanted feelings.
Other ways exercise in beneficial is that it helps improve body function, quality of life, cardiovascular health, bone and muscle health, sleep, and sense of empowerment.
The trick is to find something you enjoy. Exercise shouldn’t feel like something you dread. So explore different ways to get your body moving.
4. Stress Relief
Keeping your stress levels low has many benefits to your overall health. Relieving stress reduces inflammation (a key component in chronic illnesses), improves blood pressure and insulin activity. It also reduces gastrointestinal issues and improves quality of life. Other benefits include reducing muscle tension, improving your mood, sleep, and energy.
There are many ways to reduce your stress. Take a little time to see what works for you. Things like breathing techniques, baths, walking, yoga, meditation, journaling, and essential oils have been proven to reduce stress levels.

5. Vitamins
Vitamins D, C, E, Folate, Omega 3 fatty acids, B12, and digestive enzymes have helped many heal from their chronic illness.
Along with a proper diet taking vitamins while you are on your path to healing can give your body an extra boost. Typically once you’ve gotten to the place where your symptoms have either completely gone or greatly diminished, you can stop taking vitamins-usually around the twelve week mark.
6. Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been shown to be an effective treatment for those dealing with asthma, allergies, hypertension, chronic pain, depression, anxiety, migraines, insomnia, IBS, stress, and more. This Chinese method targets the origin of your illness by restoring normal body functions.
This is the one I have not used. However, my sister has and saw great results.
7. Chiropractic Care
This is where it all began for me. I’ve told people before that my chiropractor literally saved my life. And if you are suffering from a chronic illness you understand how every aspect of your life is affected by your illness.
Keeping my spine in alignment helps keep the inflammation in my body down, helps with headaches, improves my nervous system and digestive system, and helps me deal with stress.
8. Massage Therapy
Who doesn’t like a good massage?! But massage can be more than just an hour of relaxation. Although that is very important, there are more benefits to massage therapy.
Massage therapy can help chronic illnesses by reducing pain, improving circulation, and reduces stress. It also improves sleep, mood, and stress levels.
Many chronic illnesses are associated with circulatory issues, which can heighten symptoms and slow healing. Massage therapy can stimulate blood flow, enhancing the delivery of oxygen and other nutrients to the body’s tissues.
Today fibromyalgia isn’t at the forefront of my mind. I can live a pain and symptom-free life enjoying all the things I should be. Rarely do I have a flare up and when I do, it’s due to either the weather or when I go through a particularly stressful situation. But even then it’s not severe and is short-lived.
